Before I tell you a bit more about this series you may be interested to read a blog post I wrote at the start of the year entitled 'Why I'll be creating more art this year' over on my blogspot musingsfromthesamovar.blogspot…
So, sometime in the last few months I began a ongoing mini project of sorts resulting in several little digital art pieces containing messages of positivity stemming from my own stream of ad-lib consciousness, positive messages I'd dreamed up and juxtaposed with the negative thoughts that inevitably plague a young mind.
The very first in the series was 'Visionary Not Voyeur' against a bluey, purpley and pink marbled backdrop. Smidges of colour 'painted' onto a blank canvas and smeared, smudged, splattered to bear background to a text based, feeling provoked message. It dawned on me that often when we are berated the focus is (perhaps naturally) on our wrongdoings as a predecessor to the solution and in an idyllic world the solutions would all be there to prevent the wrongdoing (a not so natural event in the real world) but I suppose that is where the concept of 'awareness' comes from and perhaps where I'm going with this. We must be aware of ourselves, what we do, how we feel, how we can better ourselves, our negative thoughts and actions and turn them into something positive.
Visionary Not Voyeur was a look into the sociology behind how we respond to others and hence ourselves. We have become a society of voyeurs, concerning ourselves with the successes and failures of others; be they friends, family, peers or people of public interest. The internet has become an enabler, a gateway for us to spy, pry and pass judgement on what others choose to reveal about themselves be it their falls from grace or their edited personalities. It is a great irony that everyone is oh so connected by wires, signals and fibre optics yet so distant from the reality of a sense of self and by extension a sense of the bigger picture. We could easily waste precious time on comparing ourselves 'Person A' or 'Person B' wishing our lives were as carefree as their's seem or we could focus on the positives in our own. You ARE an individual and you DO have potential of your very own. You DO NOT have to validate yourself against others. This is YOUR journey. So reclaim it and make a vision, an aspiration come to fruition. You are a product of your own thoughts, experiences, loves and loathes and your future is in your hands.
Since them I have gone onto to create the following pieces:
'Better Not Bitter'
'Belove Not Begrudge'
and though it is all a bit smooshy, the intentions behind them are good. I'm still not sure whether I set out on this little endeavour for the gratification of myself or to strike a cord with others but if one person appreciates and is inspired by these little creations then that would make me a happy girl. As has been said its an ongoing thing, that progresses at that moment I dream up another nugget of almost pseudo cliche wisdom(??) but still, I am creating.
